California Micro Devices Introduces Industry's First Single Chip SOC+DDR Power Solutions for Digital Consumer Applications

Single Chip CM3132 and CM3121 Integrated Voltage Regulators Provide Lowest Cost, Smallest Footprint

MILPITAS, Calif., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- California Micro Devices (NASDAQ: CAMD), today announced the industry's first family of fully integrated, all linear regulator solutions optimized for powering SOCs (Systems On Chip) and DDR (Double Data Rate) memory in digital consumer electronics and PC peripherals. The CM3132 and CM3121 are designed to provide the industry's lowest cost and smallest footprint power solutions, replacing multiple discrete regulators and eliminating the need for costly external FETS and inductors. The CM3132 integrates three all linear regulators to supply the system's Vcore power, plus the Vddq and Vtt power for DDR memory. The CM3121 integrates the DDR Vddq and Vtt power supplies for customers who want a single chip DDR solution, but want to retain a separate Vcore regulator. The CM3132 and CM3121 are ideal power solutions for PC printers and digital consumer applications such as digital TVs, set top boxes, DVD players, PVRs (personal video recorders) and game consoles.

"Competing DDR power solutions have been optimized for higher current PC applications," stated Joe Salvador, director of marketing for computing and digital consumer products at California Micro Devices. "These solutions typically consist of integrated switching regulators that require external FETs and inductors as well as a separate Vcore regulator. By optimizing our design for lower current application requirements, we can provide a complete DDR + SOC power solution in a single, low cost 8 pin package."

Key Features

The CM3132 provides a fully integrated power solution for a SOC core and DDR memory system for digital consumer electronics applications. It features three independent linear regulators for Vcore, Vddq, and Vtt. The Vcore regulator can supply up to 1.5A with an adjustable output voltage as low as 1.2V. The Vddq regulator provides up to 1.5A with a fixed output voltage of 2.5V. The Vtt regulator is a push-pull linear regulator that accurately sources and sinks current at 1.25V up to 500 mA.

The CM3121 provides a fully integrated DDR power solution, integrating two independent linear regulators for Vddq and Vtt. The Vddq regulator can supply up to 1.5A with an adjustable output voltage from 1.7V to 2.8V, allowing it to be used for DDR I and DDR II memories. The Vtt regulator accurately sources and sinks up to 500mA at half of Vddq.

The CM3132 and CM3121 integrate overcurrent protection, overtemperature protection, and reverse current protection, as well as under voltage lockout. Both devices are available in small PSOP-8 packages, and are available in eutectic and lead free versions.

Pricing and Availability

The CM3132 and CM3121 are currently sampling along with evaluation boards. The CM3132 is priced at $1.16 each and the CM3121 is priced at $0.77 each in 1,000 unit quantities. Volume production is scheduled for Q4 2004.
